Is this a medical or diagnostic test?

No. This is a research and educational tool based on published GWAS summary statistics. Polygenic risk scores describe populations, not individuals, and should never be used to change treatment without a qualified clinician.

What happens to my DNA file?

Your raw DNA file is deleted as soon as the full analysis completes. Reports are retained up to 30 days so the tokenized report URL you receive stays usable. Nothing is shared with third parties.

How accurate is a polygenic risk score?

Accepted Answer

A polygenic risk score summarizes common-variant liability only — typically 3% to 25% of the genetic contribution to a trait, depending on how well that trait has been characterized in GWAS. Scores are population statistics, not individual predictions. Our reports report percentile, top contributing variants, and the published variance-explained for the source GWAS so you can calibrate expectations yourself.

Why is this calibrated to European-ancestry populations?

Every Psychiatric Genomics Consortium GWAS we use was conducted predominantly in European-ancestry samples. Effect sizes, allele frequencies, and linkage disequilibrium patterns differ across ancestries, so percentiles derived from European reference populations are not directly portable. We surface this caveat on every report. Larger multi-ancestry GWAS are in progress at PGC and we will incorporate them as they are published.

How is this different from the health reports 23andMe provides?

23andMe's consumer reports use a curated list of high-effect variants (mostly pharmacogenomic markers and rare Mendelian disease variants). We use the full polygenic risk architecture from published PGC GWAS — hundreds of common variants per trait, weighted by log-odds-ratio effect sizes, aggregated into a single score. Different question, different method. Our scoring methodology is fully documented at /methods.
